PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Nov. 21) – It was a successful debut for the 2008-2009 Waynesburg University men's basketball team as they upended Penn State-Beaver 80-75 during the first day of the Kron's Classic, which is hosted by La Roche College.
The Yellow Jackets (1-0) got out to a 33-29 lead at halftime, before sealing the deal in the second period by out-scoring their opponents 47-46. Over the final 20 minutes, the Jackets shot well from the field, connection on 53 percent (17-32) of their shots.
Veteran head coach Frank Ferraro got a balanced scoring attack from his team as six different players scored at least eight points in the win. Senior guard Jason Clark led the attack with a team-high 13 points on five-of-eight shooting. He also made two-of-three shots from beyond the three-point arc.
Fellow seniors Zack Engel and Dan Happe chipped in 12 points a piece, while freshman guard Larry Alexander added 11 points in his collegiate debut. Senior forward Colby Grubich and sophomore guard Jarell Rodriguez tossed in eight points each to contribute to the victory.
Grubich paced the team on the boards with six rebounds and Clark added five boards on the night. Junior guard Ryan Courneen was the team's top assist man with three.
The Waynesburg bench played a big role in the victory, as they out-scored Beaver's bench 32-21 on the night and 22-9 in the second half to help seal the deal.
Penn State-Beaver (1-1) was paced by Zach Fetchin, who poured in a game-high 25 points.
Waynesburg will try to leave La Roche with a 2-0 record after facing the host Red Hawks tomorrow at 6 p.m.
