Despite 18 points from Callie White, Jackets drop game to Golden Flyers

Box Score

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Jan. 30) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team gave up a big run early in their game with Nazareth and never recovered as they dropped a 58-48 contest to the Golden Flyers Tuesday afternoon.

Leading 10-9 at the 12:49 mark of the first period, the Yellow Jackets, who dropped to 4-5 on the year, gave up a 17-2 run to Nazareth (5-2) to fall behind by the score of 26-12. The 14-point advantage was the Flyers' largest of the contest.

After trailing by double digits for most of the game, the Jackets put together a 9-0 run starting at the 8:10 mark of the second half to trim the deficit down to three (48-45). However, Nazareth was able to stop the bleeding and seal up the victory.

Though it came in a losing effort, Waynesburg got another stellar effort from freshman forward Callie White, who poured in a game-best 18 points on five-of-13 shooting. Freshman point guard Hannah Hunter added 12 points and sophomore forward Elisha Jones chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.

Senior forward Jeannette Wonsettler came off the bench to yank down a team-best nine rebounds. Hunter also swiped a personal and game-best seven steals.

Nazareth was paced by senior center Lizzie Barlow, who led her team with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Both teams struggled from the floor, with Nazareth out-shooting Waynesburg 33 percent to 24 percent. The three-point arc was not kind to the Yellow Jackets as they were able to knock down just one try in 19 attempts.

The Yellow Jacket women had better rediscover their shooting touch quickly as their next game is in Crestview Hills, Ky., the home of nationally-ranked Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) powerhouse Thomas More.

The two teams will square off on Saturday, Jan. 3.
