WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 4) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team had 11 players log double-digit minutes, but Thomas More ended up with a 92-77 victory over the host Yellow Jackets on Wednesday night.
The loss dropped the Yellow Jackets to 6-14 on the year and 2-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The Saints remained in first place in the PAC with an 8-2 conference mark and a 14-7 overall record.
The Saints took a 48-40 lead at halftime, thanks in large part to Thomas More making 12-of-15 free throws, while the Jackets missed their only attempt from the charity stripe.
Thomas More continued to hold an advantage at the free throw line in the second period and out-scored their hosts 44-37 in the final 20 minutes of play to clinch a victory.
Along with out-shooting holding a big advantage at the foul stripe (19-of-26 to five-of-eight), Thomas More also did a better job of forcing turnovers, swiping away 11 steals to the Jackets' four. The Saints also out-rebounded the home team 31-to-22.
Though it came in a losing effort, the Jackets got a team-best 16 points off the bench from junior guard Ryan Courneen. Senior guard Dan Happe added 15 points, senior guard Jason Clark added 14 and sophomore guard Erik Noone chipped in 10 on the night.
Clark also had a game-high six assists and senior forward Colby Grubich pulled down a team-best five rebounds.
Thomas More was led by junior point guard Romell Salone, who poured in a game-high 20 points from the floor.
The Jackets will try to snap out of a four-game skid they are currently mired in on Saturday, when they travel to New Wilmington, Pa. to face Westminster. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
