Crown earns All-American status at nationals

Sophomore 125-pounder Alex Crowns' 16-1 technical fall victory over Timothy Hood of Cornell College guaranteed him of All-American status at the Division III national championships.

Sophomore picks up tech fall on his way to medal stand; Garber and Fedorka eliminated.

LA CROSSE, Wisc. (March 11) – It was a bitter-sweet second session of day one at the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships for Waynesburg University. Two of the Yellow Jackets were eliminated from competition, but the third roared back from an earlier loss to ensure All-American status.

After losing his first bout of the event, sophomore 125-pounder Alex Crown scored an 8-2 decision over Mack Drees of Wisconsin-Platteville in his first consolation bout. Crown then faced Carl Deluca of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with a spot on the medal stand at stake. The number-eight seed didn't just move on to the All-American round, he flew into it with an impressive 16-1 technical fall victory that took just 4:08 to accomplish.

Crown's next match, which will take place tomorrow, pits him against unseeded Timothy Hood of Cornell College. The winner is guaranteed to place no lower than sixth place, while the loser will wrestle for seventh place.

After a fantastic 2-0 start that included an upset win over the number-three seed, senior 141-pounder Nick Garber seemed to lose his edge in the second session of day one. He dropped into consolations with an 11-2 loss to sixth seeded Kevin Donahue in the championship quarterfinals. Facing elimination, the Waynesburg native was eliminated from the tournament and saw his college career come to an end with a 5-2 defeat at the hands of unseeded Kevin Bokoski from Cornell.

Freshman Brandon Fedorka, the Jackets' third and final representative, went 0-2 on the day and was eliminated from the heavyweight bracket. After being pinned by second seeded Mark Corsello of Elmhurst, the first-year big man battled hard against Derrick Hesson of Mt. Union. Despite giving up a huge weight advantage, Fedorka trailed just 3-2 in the third period. Unfortunately, a late takedown for Hesson sealed the win and eliminated the first-year standout.

Crown's run in consolations continues tomorrow at 10 a.m. For a complete look at the updated brackets, click here.
