Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets
2014 Matt Stansfield Head Shot

Matt Stansfield

Matt Stansfield is heading into his fourth season as Waynesburg's offensive coordinator in 2015, looking to continue the recent record-setting production.

Stansfield guided the 2014 Waynesburg offense to new heights, as the Orange and Black averaged over 400 yards per game during the season. His offensive unit boasted five first-team All-PAC selections, including record-setting quarterback Carter Hill, who threw for nearly 6,000 yards and 66 touchdowns in his final two seasons at Waynesburg.

In 2013, the Jackets averaged 387.3 yards per game, including a 283.8 yards per game average through the air. Nearly every regular contributor to the passing attack received All-PAC applause in recognition for the unit's success, including Hill, junior wide receivers Bernie Thompson and Andrew English and senior tight end Mike Ferraro.

The 2012 campaign showcased Stansfield's ability to get the tough yards on the ground. The Jackets were led a physical running attack that averaged a conference-best 201.9 yards per game. Stansfield also did a fine job of integrating his background as a Division I collegiate offensive lineman into that year's squad. Waynesburg's big men up front were some of the best in all of Division III in terms of protecting their quarterback, giving up just five sacks all season. That total that averages out to .64 quarterback takedowns per game, a mark that was the 12th lowest in the country.

Stansfield brought four years of scholarship-level coaching experience to the Yellow Jackets. He came to Waynesburg from Division I FCS Duquesne University, where he spent three years (2009-11) as the Dukes’ running backs coach and run game coordinator.

During a 2011 season that saw Duquesne go 9-2, the Dukes averaged 212.8 yards per game on the ground, an average that led the Northeast Conference and ranked 15th nationally in FCS. The rushing attack was spearheaded by then-junior Larry McCoy, who ranked ninth nationally with 1,381 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns in 11 games. Prior to going to Duquesne, Stansfield spent one year (2008) at another FCS school in Howard University, where he worked with the school’s defensive line.

Before breaking into the coaching ranks, Stansfield played center for Duquesne from 2003 to 2007, where he was a member of five MAAC championship teams. The Meadville native was also a two-time all-MAAC selection (2006 and 2007) and a 2006 Don Hansen honorable mention FCS Mid-Major All-American. Stansfield added the honor of team captain in 2007.

The lead of the Jacket offense graduated from Duquesne in 2007 with a degree in accounting and added an MBA from Duquesne in 2010. He earned those degrees after graduating from Meadville High School in 2003, where he was a three-year starter for the Bulldogs. He currently resides in Carnegie, Pa.
