WAYNESBURG (Sept. 29) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team rallied to win a 2-1 contest over Chatham University in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener for both teams at John F. Wiley Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Yellow Jacket freshman
Brittany Spitznogle tied the match after Waynesburg went down 1-0 at the half, while midfielder
Jenna Epler scored the game-winner in the 84th minute.
Waynesburg moves to 5-4-1 overall on the season and 1-0 in league play, while Chatham drops to 4-5 and 0-1 in conference action. The Yellow Jackets equaled last season's win total with the victory over the Cougars on Saturday.
After the fifth goal of the season by Chatham sophomore forward Chrissy Fiori at the 40:24-mark, Waynesburg finished the first half down 1-0 despite owning an 11-3 advantage in the shots category.
Spitznogle evened the score with her fourth goal (unassisted) of the season in the 51st minute. The score would remain tied at 1-1 for 30 minutes before Epler connected off a feed from junior
Katie Stafiej for the winning score at the 84:18-mark.
Senior goalkeeper
Amy Mills earned the victory after playing 45 scoreless minutes and registered three saves against the Cougars. Sophomore goalie Kristin Podboy suffered the loss for Chatham after allowing two goals and recording 12 saves.
The Yellow Jackets continue conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 3, with a road contest against Grove City. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
