Grove City tops Waynesburg, 3-0

WAYNESBURG (Oct. 2) – In their conference opener, the Yellow Jackets battled Grove City College to a scoreless first half tie before the Wolverines registered three second-half goals to claim a 3-0 victory on Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brad Davis kept Grove City (4-5-3, 1-0-1 PAC) off the scoreboard in the first half with eight saves on 12 shot attempts. In addition to holding a 12-3 advantage in shots during the first half, the Wolverines owned a commanding 7-1 edge in corner kicks in the first 45 minutes of play.

Despite the attacking Grove City offense, Davis and the Waynesburg University defense kept the Wolverines scoreless until the 50th minute when junior midfielder Tyler Ferrier scored from the top of the box off an assists from sophomore Sean Osborn.

Sophomore forward Michael Soriano increased the lead to 2-0 on a header at the 66:12-mark with an assist from senior Barry Snyder. Soriano added an insurance goal (unassisted) four minutes later to stake Grove City out to a 3-0 lead in the 70th minute.

Davis finished the game with 10 saves on 25 shot attempts in 90 minutes of action.

Waynesburg (3-9, 0-1 PAC) continues conference play on Thursday, Oct. 4, with a home contest against Bethany College. Game time is set for 1:45 at John F. Wiley Stadium.
