Drakeley leads Yellow Jackets past La Roche, 78-66

Senior guard sets career highs in points, rebounds, steals and minutes

WAYNESBURG (Nov. 20) – Senior guard Tim Drakeley scored a career-high 31 points on Wednesday night, as the Waynesburg University men's basketball team registered a 78-66 victory over La Roche College at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

The Yellow Jackets remain unbeaten in the early part of the season, posting their first 2-0 start to a season since the 1986-87 campaign. Meanwhile, the Redhawks fall to 1-2 this year with the loss.

Drakeley made 11-of-16 attempts from the floor, including four-of-six from long range, and made five-of-nine free-throw attempts. The Washington, Pa., native played all 40 minutes and also set career highs with eight rebounds (three offensive) and five steals against La Roche. In the second half, Drakeley made six-of-seven shots and grabbed five rebounds.

Senior guard Jered Gamble and senior forward Josh Parisi each added 12 points, while junior swingman Jason Clark added a career-high 11 points. Gamble also added five steals and a game-high five assists in 36 minutes.

As a team, Waynesburg shot 52.2 percent (24-of-46) from the field, including 58.3 percent (14-of-24) in the second half. The Yellow Jackets enjoyed tremendous success from beyond the arc, making 10-of-21 three-pointers.

After a slow start to the game, Waynesburg mounted an 11-1 run to build a 22-11 lead with 8:40 left in the first half. The Yellow Jackets maintained the lead through the remainder of the half and took a 35-29 advantage into halftime.

The Redhawks cut the deficit to one point, 39-38, in the early minutes of the second half before the Yellow Jackets built their lead back to nine points, 54-45, with 10:02 left in the game. La Roche mounted a 14-5 run over the next five minutes to tie the game at 59-59. However, Waynesburg made five of its next six shot attempts to claim a sizeable 72-64 lead with only 1:39 left in the game.

La Roche was led offensively by sophomore guard Dylan Grazier with 19 points, while senior forwards Rob Brisco and Nate Davis added 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Despite being out-rebounded by a 34-32 margin, the Yellow Jackets converted 19 Redhawk turnovers into 16 points.

Waynesburg returns to action following the Thanksgiving weekend on Monday, Nov. 26, with its first road game of the year. The Yellow Jackets travel to Frostburg, Md., to face Frostburg State University for a 7 p.m. start.
