WAYNESBURG (Nov. 28) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball lost its third-straight game on Wednesday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse, falling to Carnegie Mellon University, 60-50.

With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-3 on the season, while the Tartans move to 5-1 this year.

Waynesburg was without two of its regular starters, as both sophomore point guard Kristen Lucci and freshman forward Elisha Jones missed the game due to health issues.

Despite the 10-point loss, the Yellow Jackets held a commanding 40-30 advantage on the boards with four starters collecting eight or more rebounds. Junior Jeanette Wonsettler led all players with 10 boards in her first start of the season, while sophomore guard Johnna Deco, junior guard Sarah Gossett and junior forward Michaelene Jones all registered eight rebounds.

Gossett finished with a team-high 10 points, while Deco and Michaelene Jones each scored nine points. Junior guard Kaylyn Chapas finished with seven points and two rebounds in her first career start.

After taking a 27-17 lead into halftime after poor first-half shooting by both teams, the Tartans expanded their lead to 43-24 in the first eight minutes of the second half following a pair of free throws by junior guard Stacie Aleski, who finished with a game-high 18 points.

Waynesburg responded with a 12-7 run to cut the deficit to 48-36 following a lay-up by Deco. The Yellow Jackets were unable to trim the lead into single-digits in the final two minutes of the game when Gossett made a field goal with 1:55 left in the game, 56-47.

For the game, Carnegie Mellon shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) after making just one of their first 11 shot attempts. Waynesburg made 35.8 percent (19-of-53) of its field-goal attempts and just 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from beyond the arc. The Yellow Jackets failed to make a three-pointer until 10:59 in the second half, starting the game 0-for-12.

Waynesburg returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 1, when it opens conference play in Greenville, Pa., against Thiel College. Tip is set for 1 p.m.
