ALTOONA, Pa. (Dec. 15) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team dropped a 65-60 contest at Penn State-Altoona on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets fall to 1-7 on the year following their seventh-straight loss, while the Lions have won five-straight games to improve to 5-4 this season.
Sophomore guard
Johnna Deco led Waynesburg with a season and career-high 17 points on 7-of-15 attempts, including a perfect three-for-three from beyond the arc. She nearly finished with a double-double after collecting nine rebounds (four offensive).
Junior forward
Jeanette Wonsettler joined Deco in double figures with 10 points and five boards in 19 minutes off the bench. Freshman forward
Elisha Jones added nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds after missing nearly a month of action due to illness.
The game featured three lead changes and a tie, 12-12, in the opening 10 minutes before PSU-Altoona closed the period with a 34-27 lead.
The Lions expanded the lead to as many as 17 points, 46-29, in the first four minutes of the second half before the Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to just three points points, 55-52, with 2:43 left in the game. However, PSU-Altoona prevented Waynesburg from tying the game by making seven free throws in the final minute.
PSU-Altoona was led offensively by sophomore guard Andrea Mortimer, who scored a game-high 25 points with six rebounds in 32 minutes off the bench.
The Yellow Jackets continue their weekend road trip tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 16, with a 1 p.m. contest at Mount Aloysius in Cresson, Pa.
