MARIETTA, Ohio (Dec. 30) – Behind a season-high 55 first-half points, the Waynesburg University men's basketball team cruised to a 91-79 victory over Frostburg State Sunday afternoon in the second day of the 37th-annual Marietta College Shrine Classic.
The Yellow Jackets evened their record at 5-5 with their third win in the last four games. Meanwhile, the Bobcats fall to 2-9 overall after their third-straight loss, all by double digits.
Seniors
Tim Drakeley and
Josh Parisi headlined the Waynesburg offense, as they combined for 53 points on 17-of-28 attempts and 14 rebounds.
Drakeley led the all scorers with 28 points in 35 minutes against Frostburg State. A native of Washington, Pa., he made 7-of-13 attempts from the field, including four three-pointers, and 10-of-11 from the free-throw line. Drakeley has scored 20-plus points six times this season and leads the team and the conference in scoring at 22.2 points per game.
Parisi tallied 25 points on 10-of-15 attempts from the floor and collected a team-high eight rebounds in 36 minutes. The senior forward is posting a career year with 17.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
Senior guard
Jered Gamble finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and a team-high six assists in the win, while junior guard
Dan Happe added 11 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Waynesburg jumped out to an early 10-0 lead at the start of the game and expanded its first-half lead to as many as 22 points, 47-25, with 3:01 left before halftime. The Yellow Jackets seized control of the game in the first period after shooting 56.3 percent (18-of-32) from the floor, including 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from beyond the arc, and scoring 21 points off turnovers.
The Yellow Jackets maintained a sizeable double-digit lead throughout the second half with the Bobcats finally trimming the deficit to 12 points in the final seconds.
Frostburg State was led offensively by 23-point performances from both senior guard Brian Green and senior forward Jade Belt, who also posted a game-high 15 rebounds.
Waynesburg returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 5, when it returns to conference play with a home contest against Thomas More College. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
