WAYNESBURG (Sept. 11) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team recorded a 6-2 win over conference-newcomer Chatham University on Tuesday afternoon in the Yellow Jackets' home opener, which also was their conference opener.

The victory improved the Yellow Jackets' record to 1-3 this season with a 1-0 mark in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). With the loss, the Cougars fall to 1-4 overall with a 1-1 record in their first season of PAC play.

Waynesburg dropped the No. 1 doubles match, but the Yellow Jackets were victorious at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots to take a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Sophomores Allie Horochak and Jess Mally scored an 8-4 victory over Sowmya Narayanan and Megan Padula at the second slot. Junior Dana Davis and sophomore Carrie Daubert tallied an 8-0 win over Sarah Urick and Rebecca Minges at the third position.

Waynesburg freshman Blakeley Mall extended the Waynesburg lead when she defeated Barbara Petty, 6-4, 6-0, at the No. 2 singles position. Junior Evelyn Fabian tacked on to the Yellow Jacket lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Padula at sixth singles.

In addition to their win in doubles play, Horochak and Mally contributed straight-set victories in singles action against the Cougars. Horochak swept Kyra Walker 6-0, 6-0 at the fourth slot, while Mally posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Urick at No. 5 singles.

The match at first singles between junior Laura Garcia and Barbara Petty was suspended in the second set due to darkness. Petty won the first set, 7-5, and held a 4-2 lead in the second set with Garcia to serve. The match will be completed for seeding purposes at a later date per PAC rules. The coaches will find a date and time to complete the match in Pittsburgh at Chatham.

Waynesburg returns to action on Friday, Sept. 14, when it continues PAC play with a match against Westminster in New Wilmington, Pa. First serve is slated 4 p.m. The Titans registered an 8-1 victory over the Yellow Jackets earlier this season in the season opener for both teams.
