WAYNESBURG (Sept. 11) – In their home-opening match, the Yellow Jackets sustained a 3-1 (30-22, 28-30, 30-23, 30-26) defeat against Marietta College on Tuesday evening at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. With the loss, Waynesburg drops to 3-6 overall this season, while Marietta improves to 7-3 this year.
Junior
Laurie Lindner led the Yellow Jackets with 15 kills and 17 digs for her fourth kill/dig double-double of the season. Junior
Amanda Staudt also posted a double-double, her second of the year, with 17 assists and 11 digs in the loss.
Middle blocker
Amanda Jo Morgan added 12 kills and led the team with a .414 hitting percentage, while freshman libero
Rachell Storm tied Lindner for the team lead with 17 digs.
The Pioneers held the lead throughout the entirety of game one and closed the game on an 8-2 run. The second game was close in the early portion until Marietta increased its lead to 17-13 with a 4-1 run. However, the Yellow Jackets worked their way back to tie the score at 18-18 and eventually win the game despite not ever having more than a two-point lead in the final half of the game.
With the score even at 1-1, Marietta seized control of the third game with an 8-2 run to take a 16-10 advantage. After a Waynesburg timeout later in the game, the Yellow Jackets went on a 6-3 rally to cut the deficit to three, 22-19. Again, the Pioneers finished a game strong, as they won four of the final five points in the game.
Waynesburg looked to be in control to again tie the match early in the fourth game before Marietta went on a 9-2 run to claim a 13-10 lead. The Pioneers stretched its lead to 21-14 before the Yellow Jackets fought back to cut the deficit to only two points, 24-22, following a 7-2 run. The veteran Marietta team (five seniors, six juniors) squandered the comeback however, as it held on to the lead.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Thursday, Sept. 15, with a road match in Frostburg, Md., against Frostburg State University scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
