Waynesburg falls to Grove City in PAC opener, 3-1

WAYNESBURG (Sept. 15) – The Yellow Jackets opened conference play with a tough 3-1 (31-29, 29-31, 30-25, 30-25) loss against Grove City on Saturday morning at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Outside hitter Laurie Lindner registered her third-straight kill/dig double-double with a team-best 22 kills and 18 kills. Junior Amanda Jo Morgan joined Lindner her in double-figure kills with 17 on .359 hitting.

Freshman Rachell Storm led the defensive effort with 20 kills, while classmate Julie Incerpi added a career-high 12 kills. Junior setters Lindsey Garrison and Amanda Staudt engineered the Waynesburg offense with 24 and 21 assists, respectively.

In game one, the Wolverines and Yellow Jackets battled to 17 ties with the greatest lead being only three points before Grove City captured the game by winning the final two points, 31-29. In the second game, Waynesburg found itself down by seven points, 13-6, before it later mounted an 8-4 run to trim the deficit to three, 20-17. The Wolverines looked to be in control of the game, leading 26-22, however, the Yellow Jackets responded with a 5-2 run. Waynesburg won the game, as it won the final five points of the game.

Grove City (9-1, 1-0 PAC) seized control of game three, leading by as many as seven points, 22-17, before a Waynesburg timeout. Following the break, the Yellow Jackets trimmed the deficit to 26-23 before the Wolverines regrouped to win the game. Grove City staked itself out to a 15-8 lead in the early portion of game four to cruise to a 30-25 victory.

Waynesburg (3-8, 0-1 PAC) continues its weekend conference-opening tri-match later today, Saturday, Sept. 15, with a 3 p.m. contest against Bethany College.
