BETHANY, W.Va. (Sept. 22) – The Yellow Jackets battled Bethany College to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon. The double-overtime tie is the second in the last two years between the Yellow Jackets and Bison, as the two teams fought to a 1-1 tie in September of 2006.
With the tie, Waynesburg's record stands at 4-4-1 overall, while Bethany moves to 0-5-3. The two teams will meet again in two weeks for their conference match that will be hosted by Waynesburg.
Six minutes into the weekend match, junior Rachael Katsur found the back of the net for her second goal of the season off an assist from classmate Ruthie Pettle. The Bison took their 1-0 lead into halftime despite both teams taking four shot attempts.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets evened the contest at 1-1 at the 78:55-mark when sophomore midfielder
Jenna Epler registered her first career goal (unassisted). Neither team was able to crack the tie in the final 11-plus minutes, forcing the game into a 10-minute overtime period.
Senior goalkeeper
Amy Mills kept the game tied after stopping both Bethany shot attempts in the first overtime period. With the game still tied at 1-1 after 100 minutes of play, the two teams battled for an additional 10 minutes where Mills again kept the Bison off the scoreboard.
Mills, who entered the game at the start of the second half, recorded the tie to run her season record to1-1-1 after making four saves in 65 minutes of action. Senior Jessica Alloggia played all 110 minutes in net for Bethany, allowing one goal and making four saves on nine shot attempts.
Waynesburg returns to action on Friday, Sept. 29, when it opens Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play against Chatham University. The Yellow Jackets registered a 4-0 victory over the Cougars earlier this season in a non-conference contest.
