WOOSTER, Ohio (Sept. 8) – Freshman running back Robert Heller continued to set school history on Saturday, as he set the single-game school records for rushing yards in a game, rushing attempts in a game and tied the school record with five rushing touchdowns on Saturday, as the Yellow Jackets posted a dramatic 45-35 comeback win over the College of Wooster on Saturday at John P. Papp Stadium.

Heller finished the game with a school-record 277 rushing yards and five touchdowns (30, 2, 14, 8, 28) on a school-record 46 attempts. He also collected three receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown (52). Combined, Heller totaled 359 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns. In only two games, Heller has registered 507 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns (nine receiving).

The previous record for single-game rushing yards was 266 set by Mike Martinez against Kenyon in 1994, while Troy Westenbarger held the record for single-game attempts with 44 against Kenyon in 1992.

Waynesburg trailed 28-7 at halftime before posting the biggest comeback in recent school history. The Fighting Scots controlled the first half with three touchdown passes from sophomore quarterback Austin Holter, including two to junior wide receiver Jordan Ferns.

Early in the second half, sophomore Dylan August blocked a Wooster punt and freshman Kory Jackson recovered the loose ball at the 2-yard line. From there, Heller scored his second touchdown of the day.

On the next Yellow Jacket possession, Heller capped an 11-play, 86-yard drive with a 14-yard score with 4:02 left in the game to trim the lead to 28-21. Waynesburg continued to come up with big plays on defense, as sophomore Matt Offutt blocked a Wooster punt that allowed the Yellow Jackets to assume position in Fighting Scot territory. Waynesburg moved the ball to the 11-yard line before sophomore Kyle McBride nailed a 27-yard field goal to make it a 28-24 contest with one second remaining in the third quarter..

The Fighting Scots again experienced trouble with the special teams early in the fourth, as the punter fumbled the snap at the Wooster 10-yard line. Two plays later, Heller gave Waynesburg its first lead of the game, 31-28, on an eight-yard touchdown run with 12:40 left in the contest.

Wooster answered back with a 12-play drive, capped by a 1-yard touchdown plunge by junior Dustin Sheppard to make it a 35-31 contest with 7:43 left in the game. Waynesburg took the final lead of the game, 38-35, with 2:01 left in the contest when Heller took a screen pass from freshman quarterback Kyle Kyper 52 yards for a touchdown.

Heller sealed the victory with a 28-yard touchdown scamper with 32 seconds remaining, 45-35.

After allowing 28 first-half points, the Yellow Jacket defense allowed just 59 yards of total offense in the second half. Senior defensive end Mike Czerwien and junior defensive tackle LaDrekus Burford each led Waynesburg with 10 stops each. Czerwien was a constant force in the Wooster backfield, making 4.5 TFL and two sacks. Junior safety Ryan Krull added nine stops, while senior linebacker Brendon Steele made seven tackles withs 2.0 TFL, one fumble recovery and a sack.

Waynesburg enjoys a bye week next weekend before opening conference play on Saturday, Sept. 22, with a night game at Grove City.
