WAYNESBURG (Jan. 12) – After trailing by just four points at halftime, the Yellow Jackets suffered a 60-47 loss to Geneva College in provisional conference play Saturday evening at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Waynesburg continues to struggle since winning its season opener, falling to 1-12 overall. Meanwhile, Geneva won its third-straight game and improves to 12-1 in its first year playing a full slate of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games.
Freshman forward
Elisha Jones scored 17 points, her second-highest total of the year, after shooting four-of-eight from the field and 9-of-14 from the free-throw line. She also tied for the team lead with six rebounds (four offensive).
Freshman guard
Marquis Demniak scored nine points with three three-pointers off the bench, while junior forward
Jeanette Wonsettler added eight points, six rebounds and three assists.
The Yellow Jackets trailed by as many as 12 points, 22-10, in the first half before Demniak closed the period with a trey to make the score, 27-24, at the break despite a vast contrast in shooting percentage. The Golden Tornadoes made 10-of-20 shots (50.0 percent) in the first half, while the Yellow Jackets made just 8-of-27 attempts (29.6 percent). Waynesburg took advantage of seven offense rebounds in the first 20 minutes, scoring 12 second-chance points in the first half.
Geneva opened the second half with eight unanswered points and eventually stretched its lead to 13 points, 43-30, with 7:37 left in the game. Waynesburg again showed its ability to come back, trimming the lead to eight points three times down the stretch. However, the Golden Tornadoes made eight-of-nine free throws in the final minutes to seal the win.
Junior forward Renee Rawding, who entered the weekend ranked third in the league in scoring, finished with a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds. Senior forward Allyson Clarke, who also ranks among the conference leaders in scoring, added 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Waynesburg returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 16, when it hosts conference-rival Grove City College for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off at Marisa Fieldhouse.
