Yellow Jackets finish sixth at Washington & Lee

Drummond captures first-place finish at 141-pounds

LEXINGTON, Va. (Jan. 12) – Led by a first-place finish by newcomer Leonard Drummond, the Yellow Jackets finished sixth overall at the Washington & Lee Invitational Saturday afternoon.

Drummond posted a perfect 3-0 record at 141-pounds to earn medalist honors. He posted an impressive debut victory, winning by pin fall over junior Billy Hall of Muhlenberg College in just 41 seconds. He then posted a victory over Washington & Jefferson freshman Nick Centra before claiming the title at 141-pounds with a 9-1 major decision over senior Rich Russell of the University of Scranton in the championship match.

At 133-pounds, freshman Josh Boyle earned a third-place finish in a seven-wrestler field with a 3-1 mark. After losing his first bout to senior David Shubick of the host Generals, Boyle posted a 10-1 major decision against junior Logan Davis of Southern Virginia University in the consolation quarterfinals. Boyle then claimed a 4-2 overtime win against Muhlenberg freshman Mike Slevin in the consolation semifinals. In the third-place bout, Boyle avenged his earlier loss when he earned a 3-2 victory over Shubick. Boyle now ranks third on the team this season with seven victories, including two in dual play.

In the heavyweight division, senior LR Neubauer finished in fourth place with a 2-2 record to improve his team-leading win total to a career-high 10. Neubauer opened the invitational with a pinfall at the 5:21-mark over freshman Ed Hirsh of Washington & Jefferson for his second win over Hirsh in two weeks. In the consolation semifinals, the Yellow Jacket senior pinned sophomore Pat Thatcher of Mount St. Joseph in 4:46.

Freshman Kevin Walsh rounded out the Yellow Jacket wrestlers that earned a win over the weekend. Walsh earned a victory via pinfall at the 2:32-mark over the Generals' freshman Marshall Olszewski.

Mount St. Joseph won the team title with 94.5 points behind four first-place finishers. W&J finished in second place with 71.0 points, while Muhlenberg (68.5), host W&L (58.5) and Scranton (51.0) rounded out the top five. Waynesburg placed sixth overall with 32.5 points followed by Southern Virginia at 28.5 points.

Waynesburg returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 16, with a dual match against Duquesne University, a Division I independent program. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
