WAYNESBURG (Jan. 16) – Despite a season and career-high 18 points from senior guard
Amanda Mitchell, the Waynesburg University women's basketball team suffered a 62-52 loss to Grove City College at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse Wednesday night.
The Yellow Jackets, who led at halftime for the first time all season, lost their 13th-striaght game to fall to 1-13 overall and 0-5 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play this year. Meanwhile, the Wolverines ended their four-game skid and improve to 4-10 overall and 1-5 in league action.
Mitchell scored her 18 points on 7-of-11 attempts, including four-of-eight from beyond the arc. She also led the team with a career high seven rebounds and collected two steals and a block in 34 minutes.
Freshman forward
Elisha Jones finished with nine points and six rebounds (four offensive), while sophomore guard
Johnna Deco added eight points, four rebounds and a career-high five assists.
The Yellow Jackets took a narrow 23-20 lead into halftime following a jumper from junior forward
Michaelene Jones with 21 seconds remaining. In the opening 20 minutes, Waynesburg shot an impressive 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from the field.
However, after Grove City took a quick 29-28 lead in the opening minutes of the second half before the Yellow Jackets missed 12-straight attempts from the floor. During the seven-minute span, the Wolverines built a 40-29 lead before Waynesburg responded with three-straight field goals, including treys by Mitchell and Deco, to cut the lead to eight points, 45-37, with 7:56 remaining.
Grove City continued to maintain a double-digit lead until the final 41 seconds when Mitchell hit a three-pointer, 60-52.
Freshman forward Christine Slater led the Wolverines with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while sophomore forward Krista Beechy added a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
For the game, both teams shot a similar percent with Grove City shooting 42.1 percent (24-of-57) and Waynesburg shooting at a 41.2 clip (21-of-51) – its second-best total of the season.
Waynesburg continues conference play on Saturday, Jan. 19, when it travels to face Washington & Jefferson for a 2 p.m. start.
