Redhawks snap six-game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets

WAYNESBURG (Jan. 2) – Playing without three regular starters due to injuries, the Waynesburg University women's basketball team suffered a 53-42 loss to La Roche College Wednesday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

The Yellow Jackets, who dressed only eight players due to injuries, loss their ninth-straight game after winning the season opener to fall to 1-9 this year. Meanwhile, the Redhawks move to 9-2 this year and snapped their six-game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets that dated back to the 2001-02 season.

Waynesburg was paced by freshman forward Elisha Jones with 11 points and six rebounds, while freshman guard Marquis Demniak and junior forward Jeanette Wonsettler added 10 and nine points, respectively.

Following a tie at the 16:11-mark in the first half, La Roche held the lead for the remainder of the game. In the first half, Redhawks expanded their lead to as many as 12 points, 23-11, before the Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to seven points, 24-17, with 2:52 remaining. However, La Roche scored the final four points of the first period to take a 28-17 lead into halftime.

In the opening five minutes of the second period, Waynesburg trimmed the lead down to six points, 31-25, following a lay-up by Wonsettler. La Roche then responded with a rally to increase its lead to 18 points. The Yellow Jackets worked the deficit down to 10 points twice in the final three minutes, but failed to make it a single-digit contest.

The Yellow Jackets actually held the held the edge in both field-goal and three-point percentage, however, the Redhawks took advantage of Yellow Jacket mistakes, scoring 29 points off 22 Waynesburg turnovers.

Sophomore guard Lyndi Miloszewski led the Redhawks with 16 points and six rebounds, while senior guard Marlis Graves tallied 10 points, seven assists and five steals.

Waynesburg returns to conference play on Saturday, Jan. 5, when it hosts Thomas More College for a 1 p.m. contest at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The Saints, who are the defending conference champions, are currently ranked No. 5 in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 poll.
