Waynesburg suffers 55-50 loss to Thiel

Freshman Elisha Jones posts first career double-double

WAYNESBURG (Jan. 26) – Three starters scored in double figures and freshman forward Elisha Jones registered her first career double-double Saturday night. However, Waynesburg dropped a 55-50 contest to Thiel College at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play.

The Yellow Jackets fall to 1-16 overall with their 16-striaght loss after winning the season opener and remain winless in league action after eight games (0-8). The Tomcats remain in fifth place in the conference standings with a 4-4 league record and 7-9 overall.

Elisha Jones led Waynesburg with 13 points and 10 rebounds on 5-of-13 shooting. Junior forward Jeanette Wonsettler and Michaelene Jones finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively, and each collected five rebounds.

Waynesburg took a 26-20 lead into halftime after shooting 40 percent (8-of-20) from the floor and 75 percent (9-of-12) from the free-throw line. The first half was closely played throughout, as it featured nine lead changes and two ties.

The Yellow Jackets opened the second half strong, expanding their lead to as many as 11 points, 39-28, in the first seven points, capped by a lay-up from sophomore guard Johnna Deco, who finished with eight points, five rebounds and seven assists. The Tomcats evened the contest at 43-43 on a three-pointer by junior forward Amber Bodrick with 6:22 left in the game. From there, Bodrick led Thiel to victory, as she scored 17 of her game-high 26 points in the second half.

Bodrick, a pre-season All-American, finished with a double-double of 26 points and 12 rebounds (four offensive) with six steals, four blocks and three assists. Freshman forward Kim Stitt added 10 points and six rebounds in the win.

Waynesburg held the advantage in field-goal percentage, shooting at a 36.2 clip (17-of-47), but struggled from long range, hitting just 18.8 percent (3-of-16). However, Thiel scored 16 points off Yellow Jacket turnovers and converted 18 offensive rebounds into 15 second-chance points.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 30, when they travel to face Bethany College for an 8 p.m. game in the Hummel Fieldhouse.
