WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 23) – Waynesburg and Saint Vincent put on one heck of a show in front of the crowd gathered at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse Thursday night.
Both teams went back and forth and by the time the final point of the evening was scored, the Bearcats edged the host Yellow Jackets by the final of 3-2.
Waynesburg got their night off to a great start by taking sets one and two by the finals of 25-21 and 25-22, respectively. Unfortunately, for the home team, the Bearcats rebounded by taking set three 25-20 and set four 25-16, forcing a decisive set five.
In a closely-contested final set, Saint Vincent was able to grind out a 15-13 win to complete the comeback win.
On the night, senior outside hitter Laurie Lindner recorded her 15th double-double of the season with a team-high 16 kills and 13 digs. The Cranberry Twp. native also led the team with four blocks, all of them solo stuffs. Sophomore libero Rachell Storm led the defense with 29 digs.
Another senior, setter Amanda Staudt, added 35 assists to an outstanding final campaign in orange and black.
The loss dropped the Jackets' overall record to 8-19 overall, while the Bearcats improved to 20-7 on the year.
Though the Jackets couldn't quite pull out a victory, they still felt like winners as their match was played as part of the "Dig for the Cure" campaign. Proceeds from the contest went to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, which is working to prevent and treat Breast Cancer.
Waynesburg returns to action on Saturday when they host Bethany in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest for senior day.
