WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 7) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team won three-out-of-five contested singles matches and picked up two more victories in doubles competition to beat visiting Geneva on Tuesday.
The match got started with the doubles teams on the courts at Waynesburg University. The Yellow Jacket duo of Laura Garcia and Jessica Kody earning an 8-5 victory over Geneva's Chelsea Cover and Kara Zimmerman.
At number two doubles, Waynesburg picked up another victory, this time in a closely fought 8-6 match between the Jackets' Allie Horochak and Jess Mally and the Golden Tornadoes' team of Amy Weller and Jill Grabski.
The Tornadoes bounced back with an 8-6 win at number three doubles as Maura McLaughlin and Bethany Ragonesi teamed up to take down Waynesburg's Cassie Califf and Melissa Faulkner.
Leading 2-1 going into singles competition, Waynesburg distanced themselves in the first two solo matches thanks to wins by Garcia at number one singles and Horochak at number two. Garcia beat Cover 6-1, 7-5, while Horochak rebounded after losing the first set to down Zimmerman 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8).
Again, Geneva fought back as Weller won her number three singles match with Mally 6-2, 6-3. However, Waynesburg was able to seal the win at number four singles with Kody earning hard-fought victory over Grabski by the final of 6-7 (5), 6-1, 1 (8).
McLaughlin picked up the Tornadoes' third win of the match at fifth singles with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Daubert.
The number six singles match of Califf vs. Ragonesi was suspended due to darkness.
The win for Waynesburg, which improves their record to 2-6 overall, kicks off a busy week for the Jackets as they'll be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 9, when they host Frostburg State. The match was originally scheduled to played on Sept. 18. The loss dropped Geneva to 6-4.
