GREENVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 8) – Waynesburg University and Thiel College went back-and-forth in a fierce Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) volleyball match on Wednesday night.
When the smoke finally cleared in Greenville, the Tomcats managed to grind out a 3-2 victory in front of their home crowd.
The Tomcats looked impressive as they took a 25-10 win in set one. Waynesburg impressively bounced back with a 25-15 victory in set two. Thiel grabbed the lead back with a 25-21 victory in set number three.
The Yellow Jackets responded once again to tie the match at 2-2 by taking set four 25-22. With the contest on the line, Thiel was able to finish off their opponents with a 15-9 victory.
Senior outside hitter Laurie Lindner led the Waynesburg attack with 16 kills. The Cranberry Township native added 22 digs to an impressive night's work.
Fellow senior, middle hitter Amanda Jo Morgan, also put together a double-digit attack night with 11 kills. The team's top net defender also recorded four solo blocks and assisted on a fifth. Those blocks were significant as they allowed Morgan to pass Kathy Twaddle (2000-2002) on the school's career total blocks list.
With her work against the Tomcats, Morgan now stands with 376 total blocks, two better than Twaddle's mark of 374. The Perryopolis native is also the school's all-time career solo block leader with 206 solo swats and is third in assists with 170.
Senior setter Amanda Staudt joined Lindner in the double-double column with a team-best 39 assists and 13 digs over the five sets.
As usual, sophomore libero Rachell Storm paced the team's defense with 39 digs on the night.
The win upped Thiel's PAC record to 5-4 and improved their overall mark to 10-11. Waynesburg fell to 7-12 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
The Yellow Jackets will have a few days to recover from this tough loss before hosting a tri-match on Saturday, Oct. 11. Waynesburg will welcome Geneva and Chatham to the Marisa Fieldhouse for the event, which is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
