Waynesburg women lose nail-biter against Saint Vincent

Jackets nearly hand undefeated Bearcats first loss of the season

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 13) – For the first 20 minutes of their game with undefeated Saint Vincent, the Waynesburg University women's basketball team looked like they were going to hand the Bearcats their first loss of the season.

However, the visitors made some adjustments at halftime and managed to turn a five-point deficit into a 70-67 win. The loss dropped Waynesburg to 2-4 overall, while Saint Vincent improved to 6-0 on the season.

After taking a 3-2 lead on a Jen Scarborough three-pointer two minutes into the game, Waynesburg did not trail for the rest of the first half. The Yellow Jacket women built up a 13-point lead (31-18) with 1:45 to go in the first period after freshman guard Erika Illig knocked down a pair of free throws.

However, Saint Vincent grabbed the momentum heading into halftime by putting together an 8-0 run to trim the lead down to five (31-26).

After emerging from the locker room, sophomore forward Elisha Jones dropped a lay up to put the Jackets ahead by seven (33-26), the Bearcats went on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 35-35 with 15:14 to go.

The home team responded with a 6-0 run to take a 31-25 lead following a jumper by freshman forward Callie White with 12:47 to go in the contest. With 10:13 showing on the clock, Waynesburg built their lead up to seven (48-41) on a three-pointer by freshman point guard Hannah Hunter.

However, the Bearcats put together an eight-point run over the next 2:47 to take a 49-48 lead with 8:10 left in the second half.

Saint Vincent continued to play well down the stretch, building an 11-point (67-56) advantage with just 1:57 showing on the clock.

However, as they have done for most of the young season, Waynesburg made the last few minutes of a game very interesting down the stretch. The Jacket women put together a nine-point run, which was capped by a White three-pointer, to pull to within two (67-65) with 25 seconds to go.

However, Saint Vincent was able to make some key free throws down the stretch to seal up the victory.

Thought it came in a loss, White led all scorers with 21 points on nine-of-12 shooting. The first-year standout also made three-of-four shots from downtown. Jones chipped in 20 during the loss and added three blocks.

Scarborough added 11 points on the night and junior Johnna Deco pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Freshman guard Emily Fenton led the Bearcats with 19 points off the bench.

Though Waynesburg held the advantage in total field goals made (27 to 24), Saint Vincent edged their opponents at the charity stripe by a 15-7 advantage.

The Jacket women will try to get back to their winning ways on Friday, Dec. 19, when they host Mount Aloysius on Friday, Dec. 19.
