WAYNESBURG (Feb. 13) – Freshman
Nick Garber earned first-team all-conference laurels and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler Wednesday night, as the Yellow Jackets hosted the 49th-annual Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Wrestling Championships at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Waynesburg University finished in third place at the event with a score of 58 points behind conference-powerhouse Thiel College (145.5) and Washington & Jefferson College (105.5).
Garber posted a pair of pinfall victories at 141-pounds to capture the all-conference accolades. The Waynesburg native opened the night with a fall over W&J freshman Nicholas Centra in just 38 seconds before pinning freshman Tucker Velez of Thiel at the 1:17-mark. Garber is the first Yellow Jacket to earn Most Outstanding Wrestler since fellow Greene County native
Shawn Whyte accomplished the feat as a freshman in 1999.
Freshman
Kevin Walsh and senior
LR Neubauer each received second-team all-conference accolades in the 157-pounds and heavyweight flights, respectively. Walsh earned a pinfall against the Presidents' Zachary Bussard at the 2:16-mark, while Neubauer earned the honor after posting a 4-1 decision over senior A.J. Parker of Thiel.
Also competing for the Yellow Jackets at the conference championships were freshmen
Josh Boyle (133-pounds), sophomore
Abdul Yusuff (149-pounds) and junior
Mike Capuzzi (197-pounds).
The Matcats captured their 16th conference title in the last 18 years by capturing six of the 10 conference titles. In his third-year with the Presidents, Jay Robinson received PAC Coach of the Year accolades for the first time in his career.
Waynesburg is idle this weekend before returning to action next Saturday, Feb. 23, at the NCAA Midwest Regionals, hosted by Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind.
