WAYNESBURG (Feb. 9) – Behind a game-high 29 points from senior guard
Tim Drakeley and sharp second-half shooting (64.5 percent), the Yellow Jackets claimed an 83-77 victory over Westminster College in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The win for Waynesburg moves to the Yellow Jackets to 8-13 overall and to 2-8 in the PAC, while snapping a four-game losing streak. The Westminster loss marks the seventh in the last 10 games for the Titans, who fall to 5-17 overall and 3-7 in league play.
Drakeley shot 10-of-21 from the floor, including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc, with six rebounds and five assists. Joining Drakeley in double-figure scoring for Waynesburg were senior forward
Josh Parisi and senior guard
Jered Gamble with 20 and 10 points, respectively. Parisi also had eight rebounds and Gamble had six assists.
The Yellow Jackets forced 16 turnovers by the Titans and converted the turnovers into 23 points. Despite being out-rebounded by Westminster (45-37), Waynesburg held a decisive advantage in points in the paint, scoring 46 of its 83 points from in close.
The Titans were paced by an impressive 24-point, 21-rebound performance by sophomore forward Ryne Murray. Senior guard Craig Hannon finished with 18 points and set the Westminster school record for points in a career with 1,633 points.
After five lead changes and six ties in the first half, Waynesburg held a narrow 33-30 edge at intermission. Westminster again evened the score at 48-48 with 11:47 left in the game before the Yellow Jackets reclaimed momentum with an 11-2 run to take a 59-50 lead. The Titans eventually trimmed the lead to six points following a three-pointer by senior swingman Chauncey Whitlow with 12 seconds remaining.
For the game, Waynesburg shot 47.1 percent from the field, making 32-of-68 shots. Westminster managed to shoot 39.4 percent (26-of-66) from the field, including 10-of-33 from beyond the arc.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 13, when they travel to face Geneva College for a 7:30 p.m. contest in Beaver Falls, Pa.
