Herrington reaches ECAC qualifying mark in the discus

PITTSBURGH (March 29) – The Waynesburg University men's track & field team broke a pair of school records and junior Willy Herrington (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville) reached the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) qualifying mark in the discus Saturday at the Western Pennsylvania Championships hosted by Carnegie Mellon University.

Herrington posted a pair of top-10 finishes in the first outdoor event of the season. The junior thrower finished fourth overall in the discus with a heave of 141.24 feet (43.05 meters) to qualify for the ECAC Championships on May 16-17 in Springfield, Mass. Herrington finished sixth in the shot put with a hurl of 43.70 feet (13.32 meters). Both of his marks ranked second overall among non-scholarship throwers.

Freshman Trale Merz (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) set the school record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.78 seconds. He finished first in his heat and ninth overall behind several scholarship runners. Merz also competed in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relay.

Fellow freshman Adam Swingle (Mont Clair, Va./Forest Park) also broke a school record and anchored the 4x400 relay at CMU. Swingle set the school mark in the 800-meter run with a time of 4 minutes 21.93 seconds in a 33-runner field. He also competed in the 1500-meter run at the Western Pennsylvania Championships.

Senior Nick Staffieri (Belle Vernon, Pa./Geibel Catholic) added a 13th-place finish in the long jump for the Yellow Jackets with a leap of 19.72 feet (6.01 meters).

Waynesburg totaled eight points in the 15-team event, which was won by host Carnegie Mellon with 151 points.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday, April 5, when they compete in the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. Events are scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.
