STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (April 1) – The Waynesburg University baseball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep Tuesday night against Franciscan University, 11-2 and 20-0, scoring a combined 31 runs on 28 hits in the two games.

The Yellow Jackets' pitching was also impressive against Franciscan, as freshman Austin Long (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny) and sophomore Bryan Leones (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) each tossed complete-games victories. The starters allowed only a combined two runs on five hits in 14.0 innings with 18 strikeouts against the Barons.

In Game 1, the Barons (1-10-1) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before the Yellow Jackets took a 2-1 lead in the third after scoring unearned runs in both the second and third innings.

Waynesburg (10-11) expanded its lead to 8-1 with a six-run fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by sophomore shortstop Dan Novak (Rock Hill, S.C./Chartiers-Houston) – the third homer of his career.

The Yellow Jackets continued to increase their lead with a run in the sixth before Novak belted an RBI triple in the seventh. Novak scored later in the inning on a single by freshman designated hitter Brandon Yetman (Buffalo, N.Y./Frontier Central).

Long improved to 2-1 this season after allowing two runs on three hits in his first career complete game. The freshman hurler yielded six walks and registered a career-high five strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

Novak finishing just a double shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with one triple, one homer, four RBI and two runs scored in the first game. Junior first baseman Brandon Dittmar (Strabane, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and sophomore right fielder Scott Cree (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) each logged two hits in the game and Dittmar scored three times.

The high-scoring offense continued for Waynesburg in Game 2, as the Yellow Jackets scored 20 runs on 16 hits. The 20 runs were the most scored by the Yellow Jackets since a 21-8 victory over SUNY-Old Westbury on March 11, 2005.

Waynesburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after back-to-back, two-out RBI hits from Dittmar and senior designated hitter Adam Bear (Piedmont, Ohio/Buckeye Trail). The Yellow Jackets added another run in the second on an RBI single by senior left fielder Jerry Daley (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) that scored Cree, who started the inning with a triple.

After scoring two more runs in the third, 6-0, the Yellow Jackets mounted an 11-run fourth inning on just five hits. Daley and senior center fielder Brendon Steele (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) each collected two-run doubles, while Novak added an RBI single in the inning. The Barons surrendered two bases-loaded walks and also hit a batter with the bases loaded in the inning.

After mass substitutions, Waynesburg added three runs in the sixth, 20-0, on an RBI double by freshman Dave Buzzard (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville) and a two-run double by freshman Jesse Gonzalez (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood).

Leones (2-3) scattered two hits over seven innings for his first complete-game shutout of his career. The Pine-Richland graduate set a career high with 13 strikeouts in the victory and allowed only one base runner to reach scoring position.

In limited time, Cree and Daley each collected two hits to lead the team. Daley went 2-for-2 with four RBI and one run scored, while Cree finished 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored.

A total of 14 different players collected hits for the Yellow Jackets, who also logged 13 walks in the game, the highest total in recent program history.

Waynesburg returns to action on Thursday, April 4, with a road doubleheader against Penn State-Altoona with the first game scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
