Dittmar belts game-ending grand slam in bottom of the eighth inning

WAYNESBURG (April 15) – The Yellow Jackets posted an impressive 22-9 win over Franciscan University in a nine-inning, non-conference game at Madison Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Waynesburg University scored the most runs in recent program history (since 2003) in the victory. The Yellow Jackets' previous best came in a 21-8 win over SUNY-Old Westbury on March 11, 2005.

The Yellow Jackets (15-15) scored nine runs in the seventh inning and added 10 runs in the eighth, capped by a game-ending grand slam by junior first baseman Brandon Dittmar (Strabane, Pa./Canon-McMillan) in the bottom of the eighth with no outs. The grand slam was the first by a Waynesburg player since Brian Gerginski, now a graduate assistant with the program, belted a grand slam in the victory over SUNY-Old Westbury.

Second baseman Wes White Jr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) and right fielder Scott Cree (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) led the Yellow Jackets' offensive arsenal. White went 4-for-4 with one triple, three runs and four RBI. He extended his hit streak to eight games. Cree went 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI.

Shortstop Dan Novak (Rock Hill, S.C./Chartiers-Houston) went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI and Dittmar went 2-for-5 with two runs and four RBI, including his second career homer. Third baseman Andrew Spargur (Indian Head, Pa./Connellsville) finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI after entering the game in the sixth. Seniors Brendon Steele (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Ryan Group (Washington, Pa./McGuffey) each collected a pair of RBI in the victory.

Freshman Steve Hubsch (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) (2-1) picked up win with 4.2 innings of relief. He fanned two and allowed three runs on five hits and one walk. Senior Frank Valencic (Eighty-Four, Pa./Canon-McMillan) earned his first career start against the Barons, pitching 2.1 innings.

Junior Matt Liedel was saddled with the loss for Franciscan after allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits and four walks over six-plus innings.

Waynesburg returns to the diamond on Thursday, April 17, with a road non-conference doubleheader against Penn State-Beaver. The first game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start in Monaca, Pa.
