WAYNESBURG (April 19) – The Yellow Jackets managed a split of their doubleheader with Saint Vincent College on Saturday afternoon at Madison Field, winning 9-6 before losing the nightcap 23-6.
In Game 1, sophomore
Zac Rhoades (Washington, Pa./McGuffey) (6-3) earned the win after allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks in 6.1 innings. Fellow sophomore hurler
Ryan Lavrusky (Temple Terrace, Fla./King) earned his first save of the season with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Waynesburg (16-18) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with runs in both the first and second innings, including a solo homer by sophomore shortstop
Dan Novak (Rock Hill, S.C./Chartiers-Houston). Novak has belted a career-best five home runs this season, the highest total for a Yellow Jackets' player since
Eric Holt launched nine homers in 2003.
After the Bearcats (12-13) scored in the top of the fifth, the Yellow Jackets countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning before adding two insurance runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Five different Waynesburg players posted multi-hit games in the doubleheader opener, including sophomore center fielder
Andrew Spargur (Indian Head, Pa./Connellsville), who went 2-for-3 with one double, one run and two RBI. Seniors
Adam Bear (Piedmont, Ohio/Buckeye Trail) and
Ryan Group (Washington, Pa./McGuffey) each collected a pair of RBI in the victory.
The Saint Vincent offense exploded for 23 runs on 21 hits and benefited from a season-worst seven Yellow Jacket errors. Freshman starter
Austin Long (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny) (2-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs on four hits and two walks in 0.1 innings. Long was one of five Waynesburg hurlers to see action in Game 2.
After the Bearcats jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the top of the first, the Yellow Jackets cut the deficit with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Novak and sophomore right fielder
Scott Cree (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) each posted two-run singles, while sophomore catcher
Adam Denman (Washington, Pa./Trinity) drew a bases-loaded walk.
However, Saint Vincent struck for another eight runs in the second inning to take a commanding 16-5 lead. The Bearcats added one run in the third and added six more in the eighth en route to the 23-6 victory.
Bear went 2-for-4 with two runs, while sophomore second baseman
Wes White Jr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) went 2-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
Waynesburg returns to action on Tuesday, April 22, with a conference doubleheader against Thiel College at Madison Field. The first game is slated for a 12 p.m. start. The series will mark the final homes of the regular season for the Yellow Jackets.
