WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 19) – The Waynesburg University softball team dropped both games of its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader against Washington & Jefferson College at Brooks Park on Saturday, 6-1 and 12-4.
The first game featured a match-up of two of the top pitchers in the conference in juniors
Autumn Minor (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) and Rebecca Nachreiner. W&J's Nachreiner (14-2) earned the complete-game victory, allowing one unearned run on four hits and three walks in seven innings with five strikeouts. Minor (8-6) suffered the loss despite allowing no earned runs (six unearned) on six hits and four walks in six innings.
The Presidents scored all six of their runs in the bottom of the fourth. After the first batter of the inning reached base on an error, Minor retired the next two batters before five of the next six W&J batters reached base via hit. The Yellow Jackets' lone run came in the seventh when junior shortstop
Haley Kramer (Ellwood City, Pa./Laurel) lined a two-out single that scored freshman left fielder
Samantha Melone (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan).
In Game 2, Waynesburg took an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by Minor – her third of the season. W&J evened the contest in the third with four runs before plating three runs in the fourth to take a 7-4 advantage. The Presidents added five insurance runs in the sixth to take the 12-4 victory.
Freshman
Amanda Baughman (Washington, Pa./Washington) was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs on 11 hits in 4.2 innings of work. Sophomore left-hander Georgia Schumacher (8-2) yielded four runs (three earned) on three hits in six innings, while fanning seven.
Waynesburg continues conference play on Monday, April 21, when it hosts Westminster College. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for late March, but weather conditions forced the postponement of the games.
