WAYNESBURG (April 2) – The Waynesburg University softball team was swept in its suspended doubleheader against Carlow University Wednesday afternoon, 8-2 and 4-1. The doubleheader started at the beginning of the third inning in Game 1 after yesterday's afternoon rainfall forced the game to be suspended.

The losses drop the Yellow Jackets to 4-8 on the year, while the Celtics improve to 9-3.

In Game 1, junior right-hander Autumn Minor (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) (3-2) suffered the loss for the Yellow Jackets, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits in 7.0 innings with no walks and five strikeouts. Carlow starter Becca Roland earned the win for the Celtics after scattering four hits and surrendering one run with two walks and 15 strikeouts in the complete-game victory.

Carlow, a NAIA program, held a 2-0 lead in the fourth before Waynesburg cut the deficit in half, 2-1, with a solo homer by Minor to left field. The Celtics added a pair of insurance runs (both unearned) on no hits in the top of the sixth

The Yellow Jackets managed only four hits in 26 at-bats in Game 1 with Minor recording the team's only RBI with her first career homer.

In the nightcap, freshman hurler Kristen Lautenschlager (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carlynton) (0-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs on five hits in 3.0 innings of relief. Lautenschlager fanned two and walked a pair before giving way to junior Karina Graziani (Confluence, Pa./Turkeyfoot Valley), who threw the final two innings, allowing one run (unearned) on one hit with three walks and two strikeouts. Carlow starter Madison Sirko earned the victory, going 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits.

The Celtics grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning before the Yellow Jackets evened the contest at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. Junior catcher Kristyn Klueg (East Northport, N.Y./John H. Glenn) and Lautenschlager started the rally with back-to-back doubles before Lautenschlager scored on a fielder's choice.

Carlow reclaimed the momentum by scoring five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth before adding another run in the fifth, 8-2.

Both team collected seven hits in the second half of the doubleheader, however, Waynesburg struggled in the field, committing three errors.

The Yellow Jackets return to action tomorrow, Thursday, April 3, when it hosts Saint Vincent College in a provisional conference game. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
