WAYNESBURG (April 21) – The Yellow Jackets used a pair of complete-game performances by junior hurler
Autumn Minor (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) and freshman right-hander
Amanda Baughman (Washington, Pa./Washington) as they swept a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader from Westminster College on Monday afternoon. Waynesburg University knocked off Westminster, 9-1, in the first game and posted a 6-4 comeback win in the nightcap.
The Waynesburg victories improve the Yellow Jackets to 15-15 on the year, including a 7-5 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Titans fall to 18-11 overall and 5-5 in conference action.
In Game 1, Minor (9-6) tossed her 13th complete game of the season, scattering three hits, fanning five batters and walking one in five innings of work. Titans' starter Jennifer Emery (9-3) suffered the loss after throwing four innings, allowing nine runs (all unearned) on seven hits and one walk.
In the first, Waynesburg took an early 1-0 lead, manufacturing a run with a single, error, sacrifice bunt and a RBI ground-out by Baughman. Westminster responded with a run in the fourth, evening the game at 1-1 before the Yellow Jackets countered with eight runs in the bottom of the inning. Karina Graziani (Confluence, Pa./Turkeyfoot Valley) followed with a RBI before scoring on a two-run single by senior right fielder
Amy Mills (Clear Spring, Md./Clear Spring). The runs continued with a RBI double by freshman center fielder
Amber Pivik (Washington, Pa./Washington) before Baughman highlighted the inning with a three-run homer run to right center field, her fourth homer of the season.
Sophomore shortstop
Haley Kramer (Ellwood City, Pa./Laurel) paced the Yellow Jackets' offense in the Game 1 win, collecting two hits and two runs scored. Baughman finished the contest with four RBI and two runs.
Baughman (5-6) earned the victory in the nightcap, tossing her fifth complete game of the season, while allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits, walking one and striking out three. Westminster's Liz Schulz (3-3) was saddled with the loss after giving up five runs on 13 hits in six-plus innings of work.
Minor headlined the offense in the second game, launching the eventual game-winning, two-run homer (her fourth of the season) in the top of the seventh. Minor and Baughman each collected three hits in the nightcap, while junior catcher
Kristyn Klueg (East Northport, N.Y./John H. Glenn) posted a pair of RBI.
The Titans took a quick 4-0 lead in the second inning on four hits and a walk. The Yellow Jackets chipped away at the lead in the third with RBI singles from Baughman and Minor. Waynesburg eventually evened the contest at 4-4 in the top of the sixth with a two-run, two-out double by Klueg.
The Yellow Jackets return to action tomorrow, Tuesday, April 22, at 3 p.m. when they travel to face Geneva College for a doubleheader at Beaver Falls, Pa.
