WAYNESURG (April 22) – The Waynesburg University baseball team was swept in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader by Thiel College on Tuesday afternoon at Madison Field, losing 22-7 and 2-1.
The Yellow Jackets fall to 16-20 overall and 4-8 in league play after the twin bill, while the Tomcats move to 21-11 overall and 6-4 in conference action.
In Game 1, Thiel held a 6-3 lead after five innings before posting a 12-run outburst in the sixth. The Tomcats added four runs in the eighth to take a comfortable 22-3 lead before the Yellow Jackets added a run in the eighth and three runs in the ninth.
The Waynesburg offense was paced by sophomore shortstop
Dan Novak (Rock Hill, S.C./Chartiers-Houston), who went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Senior third baseman
Ryan Group (Washington, Pa./McGuffey) finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI, while sophomore second baseman
Wes White Jr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) added a pair of hits.
Junior Josh Tedesco (8-3) earned the win for the Tomcats, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks in seven innings. Sophomore
Bryan Leones (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) (2-6) was saddled with the loss after tossing the first 5.2 innings of the game.
The nightcap featured a pitchers' dual between senior Eric Wadowsky and sophomore
Ryan Lavrusky (Temple Terrace, Fla./King). Wadowsky (3-2) earned the win for Thiel after yielding one run on seven hits and one walk Lavrusky (3-4) tossed his fifth complete game of the season, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out four.
The Yellow Jackets took a quick 1-0 lead with a solo homer by senior center fielder
Brendon Steele (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), his second of the season, in the first inning. The lead held until the sixth inning when the Tomcats scored both their runs with back-to-back sacrifice flies.
Freshman first baseman
Bill Hanning (Claysville, Pa./McGuffey) led the Waynesburg offense with two hits, while White extended his hit streak to 14-straight games with a single in the third inning.
The doubleheader marked the final home games at Madison Field for five four-year seniors:
Adam Bear (Piedmont, Ohio/Buckeye Trail),
Jerry Daley (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell), Group, Steele and
Frank Valencic (Eighty-Four, Pa./Canon-McMillan).
The Yellow Jackets conclude their regular season on Saturday, April 26, when they travel to Beaver Falls, Pa., for a 12 p.m. doubleheader against Geneva College.
