Yellow Jackets end season with split at Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (April 26) – The Yellow Jackets managed a split of their season-ending doubleheader with Geneva College on Saturday afternoon, winning 12-7 in the opener before losing the second game by an 8-6 count.

Waynesburg University finishes the season with a 17-21 overall record and a 4-8 mark in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Meanwhile, Geneva College moves to 14-14 overall with six regular-season games remaining on its schedule.

In Game 1, the Yellow Jackets withstood a four-run, ninth-inning rally by the Golden Tornadoes to preserve the 12-7 victory. Sophomore starter Bryan Leones (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) (3-6) earned the victory after tossing 8.2 innings, allowing seven runs (three earned) on nine hits, while striking out five. Geneva starter Dave Foss (4-2) suffered the loss after yielding five runs on four hits and six walks in 3.1 innings.

Waynesburg took a quick 5-0 lead after four innings, scoring one run in the second before plating two runs in both the third and fourth. The Yellow Jackets added another run in the sixth before the Golden Tornadoes scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Waynesburg countered with three runs in the seventh before adding two more in the eighth

Sophomore second baseman Wes White Jr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) paced the 13-hit attack for the Yellow Jackets, going 3-for-4 to extend his hit streak to 15-straight games. White also scored three runs and stole two bases. Sophomore shortstop Dan Novak (Rock Hill, S.C./Chartiers-Houston) went 2-for-5 with one double and three RBI, while senior center fielder Brendon Steele (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) finished with three RBI. Sophomore catcher Adam Denman (Washington, Pa./Trinity) went 2-for-5 with two RBI and freshman left fielder Bill Hanning (Claysville, Pa./McGuffey) belted a two-run homer in the eighth – his first of the season.

In the nightcap, Geneva broke a 6-6 tie with a run in both the seventh and eighth to take the 8-6 victory. Sophomore right-hander Ryan Lavrusky (Temple Terrace, Fla./King) (3-5) was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) on 12 hits in seven innings with one walk and nine strikeouts, tying his season high. Golden Tornadoes' reliever Justin Montgomery (1-1) earned the win after tossing three scoreless innings.

Geneva scored a pair of runs in the third to break a 2-2 tie before Waynesburg evened the contest in the top of the fifth with two runs on two hits, one walk, one error and one hit by pitch. The Golden Tornadoes took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs before the Yellow Jackets tied the contest with a two-run single by Hanning in the sixth.

Hanning went 4-for-5 with one double, one run and three RBI in the nightcap, while sophomore shortstop Andrew Spargur (Indian Head, Pa./Connellsville) collected two hits.

The games marked the final games in the careers of five four-year seniors: Adam Bear (Piedmont, Ohio/Buckeye Trail), Jerry Daley (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell), Ryan Group (Washington, Pa./McGuffey), Steele and Frank Valencic (Eighty-Four, Pa./Canon-McMillan). After starting both games of the doubleheader, Group finished his career with 141 starts – the most in recent program history
