ALTOONA, Pa. (April 3) – After suffering a tough 4-3 loss in Game 1, the Yellow Jackets managed a split of their doubleheader at Penn State-Altoona with a 14-3 win in Game 2 on Thursday afternoon.

In the nightcap, Waynesburg University (11-12) held a slim 2-1 lead after the first inning before adding a pair of runs in the third with an RBI double from senior designated hitter Adam Bear (Piedmont, Ohio/Buckeye Trail) and an RBI single by sophomore right fielder Scott Cree (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central). The Yellow Jackets expanded their lead to 7-1 in the fourth on a wild pitch and RBI single by freshman left fielder Bill Hanning (Claysville, Pa./McGuffey).

The Waynesburg offensive outburst continued in the fifth when it plated four runs on three hits, two wild pitches, two walks and two errors. The Lions (7-11) countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 11-3 before the Yellow Jackets sealed the victory with three runs in the seventh behind RBI singles from Bear, Cree and sophomore second baseman Wes White Jr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry).

Cree went 4-for-5 with one run scored, two RBI and one stolen base in the nightcap, while White posted three hits and two runs scored. Bear and sophomore shortstop Dan Novak (Rock Hill, S.C./Chartiers-Houston) also posted two RBI in the victory.

Sophomore Zac Rhoades (Washington, Pa./McGuffey) moved to 3-1 on the season after surrendering three runs on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Freshman Steve Hubsch (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) tossed a scoreless 2.2 innings of relief for the Yellow Jackets in the victory.

In Game 1, Penn State-Altoona jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning before Waynesburg cut the deficit to 3-1 in the third when junior first baseman Brandon Dittmar (Strabane, Pa./Canon-McMillan) drew a bases-loaded walk. The Lions countered with a run in the bottom of the third to reclaim a three-run lead, 4-1.

The game remained 4-1 until the seventh when the Yellow Jackets mounted a two-out rally with a two-run homer by Novak – his second of the season and fourth of his career. However, the Lions were able to retire the final out of the game to preserve the victory.

Freshman Tim Knight (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits with one walk in his first career complete game. Sophomore Nate Detwiler earned the win for the Lions after allowing one run in 5.0 innings, while freshman Kevin Obermeier picked up the save after working the seventh inning.

Waynesburg returns to the diamond on Saturday, April 5, with a 12 p.m. conference doubleheader against Thomas More College at Madison Field.
