WAYNESBURG (April 3) – The Yellow Jackets were shutout in both games of their Thursday doubleheader against provisional conference member Saint Vincent College, 2-0 and 4-0.
The Bearcats (14-4) won a pitchers' dual in Game 1 between junior Mollie Stock and
Autumn Minor (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central). Stock improved to 6-2 this season after scattering three hits in 7.0 innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Minor (3-3) suffered the loss despite allowing two runs (one earned) on nine hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.
Saint Vincent took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning after Waynesburg committed a two-out error that eventually led to a RBI single by Michelle Greenawalt, The Bearcats looked to increase their lead in the fourth with runners on second and third and one out before Minor worked out of the inning without allowing a run.
The best attempts for Waynesburg (4-10) to avoid shutout were in the fifth and sixth innings when it had runners in scoring position in both frames.
The Bearcats added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Greenawalt started the inning with a ground-rule double before scoring on a single by Rachel Komarinski.
In the nightcap, junior Ashley Whipkey (8-2) limited the Yellow Jackets to two hits, while issuing one walk and registering seven strikeouts. Freshman
Amanda Baughman (Washington, Pa./Washington) fell to 0-4 this year after allowing four runs (all unearned) on seven hits in 5.0 innings with no walks and six strikeouts.
Stock, who started at first base in Game 2, gave Saint Vincent a 2-0 lead in the third inning with a two-out, two-run double. The Bearcats added a pair of runs in the fifth inning to increase its lead to 4-0.
Whipkey allowed only one base runner to reach scoring position after retiring the first 11-straight batters of the game.
Waynesburg returns to action on Saturday, April 5, when it travels to face Grove City College for a conference doubleheader. The first game is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
