GROVE CITY, Pa. (April 5) – After losing Game 1 in extra innings, 4-3, the Waynesburg University softball team rallied to win Game 2 of its doubleheader against Grove City College by a 3-2 count at College Field on Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action.

In Game 1, the Yellow Jackets (5-11, 1-1 PAC) rallied to tie the contest at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Wolverines pushed across the game-winning run in the top of the eighth.

Junior Autumn Minor (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) (3-4) was saddled with the loss, tossing eight innings, scattering four runs (three earned), allowing eight hits, while striking out three. Freshman Kim Guyaux (3-0) claimed the victory, allowing three unearned runs on two hits with five strikeouts.

The Wolverines (4-12, 2-2 PAC) manufactured the game-winning run in the top of eighth. After the leadoff hitter reached base on an error, Grove City moved the runner into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Following a ground out to the right side, right fielder Rachael Risbon lined a two-out, eventual game-winning single into center field.

Grove City notched the game's first two runs in the first inning before Waynesburg evened the contest at 2-2 in the third. Left fielder Samantha Melone (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) reached base on a one-out walk and later scored on a Wolverine error that allowed shortstop Haley Kramer (Ellwood City, Pa./Laurel) to reach base. Center fielder Amber Pivik (Washington, Pa./Washington) followed with a two-out double to left field, scoring Kramer from first base.

After the Wolverines reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth, the Yellow Jackets again tied the contest in the sixth. Pivik reached base on an error to start the inning and advanced to third on another error later in the inning before scoring on a fielder's choice.

In the nightcap, freshman Amanda Baughman (Washington, Pa./Washington) was the difference for Waynesburg. The Washington native earned her first collegiate win (1-4) in the circle and also belted her second homer of the season.

Baughman helped her own cause in the top of the first with a two-out, two-run homer to left center field that also scored catcher Kristyn Klueg (East Northport, N.Y./John H. Glenn). However, Grove City countered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 2-2.

The Yellow Jackets broke the tie in the fourth, as Minor scored on a RBI single by third baseman Nicole Forte (Bell Acres, Pa./Quaker Valley).

The one-run cushion proved to be enough for Baughman, who allowed only one runner to reach scoring position after the second inning. She allowed only two runs on seven hits in seven innings with no walks and five strikeouts.

Freshman Lauren Pennell (1-10) was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs (all earned) on eight hits in six innings with eight strikeouts.

Baughman and Forte headlined the Waynesburg offense in the nightcap with two hits each.

The Yellow Jackets return to action at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 7, when they travel to face Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio.
