BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (April 9) – Behind three first-place finishes, the Waynesburg University men's track & field team captured second place with 129 points on Wednesday at the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Quad, hosted by Geneva College.
Bethany College finished in first place with 152 points, followed by Waynesburg, Geneva (64) and Washington & Jefferson College (62).
Freshman
Adam Swingle (Mont Clair, Va./Forest Park) eclipsed his school record with a first-place time of 2 minutes, 2.01 seconds in the 800-meter run. He previously set the school record in late March with a time of 2:03.12.
The Yellow Jackets garnered a 1-2 finish in the 800 meters, as sophomore
Shea Gottschalk (Prosperity, Pa./McGuffey) crossed the finish line in 2:04.20.
Junior
Willy Herrington (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville) won the shot put title with a heave of 46.39 feet (14.14 meters), winning the event by over a 1.5 feet. He also finished second in the discus with a throw of 124.61 feet (37.98 meters).
Senior
Nick Staffieri (Belle Vernon, Pa./Geibel Catholic) earned a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.14 seconds, just one-tenth of a second ahead of freshman teammate
Matt Wilson (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers).
Staffieri also posted second-place showings in the long jump with a leap of 19.42 feet (5.92 meters) and the high jump with a mark of 5.68 feet (1.73 meters).
Freshman
Trale Merz (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) also registered a pair of second-place finishes. He opened the afternoon with a time of 17.68 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles before posting a time of 1:01.39 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Waynesburg also won the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:40.41.
The Yellow Jackets return to competition on Saturday, April 12, at the Slippery Rock Invitational.
