Staffieri, Merz represent Waynesburg at 45-team invitational

MEADVILLE, Pa. (May 9) – A pair of Yellow Jackets - senior Nick Staffieri (Belle Vernon, Pa./Geibel Catholic) and freshman Trale Merz (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) – competed on Friday at the Gator Invitational, hosted by Allegheny College.

Staffieri posted a mark of 19.39 feet (5.91 meters) in the long jump to finish 12th overall.

Merz competed in the both the 110 and 400-meter hurdles at the invitational, which featured over 45 programs from all divisions around the area. In the 110-meter hurdles, the freshman posted a time of 17.07 seconds to finish seventh in his flight and 12th overall. Merz then completed the 400-meter hurdles in 59.05 seconds to finish third-best in his flight and 10th overall.

Junior Willy Herrington (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville), who did not compete at the Gator Invitational, will represent the Waynesburg University men's track & field team at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships in Springfield, Mass., on May 16-17. Herrington qualified for the post-season championship in both the shot put and discus throw.
