PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Aug. 30) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team took a 1-0 lead in the first half of their contest with Point Park, but couldn't hold onto it as the Pioneers scored a pair of second-half goals to earn a 2-1 victory at the LaRoche Tournament, held at LaRoche College.
The Yellow Jackets (1-1) took the first lead of the game 40 minutes in when freshman Courtney Ebersole buried her first goal of the season off of an assist from junior Katie Gaspich.
However, in the second half, Point Park responded with a tally by Amanda Trainor at 67:00 into the contest. The winning score came 12 minutes later, courtesy of Melia Muckle, who was assisted on the goal by Angela Olivieri.
Four different Waynesburg goaltenders got time in front of the net. Senior Paige Yeich got the start, made one save and didn't allow a goal in 25 minutes of work. Freshman Shay Smith followed with 20 minutes of work in which she didn't face a shot on goal.
The second half was worked by fellow freshman Katrina Kelly, who allowed the game-tying goal and made four saves in 25 minutes of work during the second period. The final 20 minutes of the contest was worked by freshman Jaime Williamson, who gave up the game-winner and made three saves.
The Yellow Jackets are off until Sept. 5, when they host Chatham for a 6 p.m. game in their home opener.
