Volleyball team splits PAC doubleheader

Yellow Jackets beat Grove City 3-1, fall 3-2 to Washington and Jefferson

 

GROVE CITY, Pa. (Sept. 20) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team picked up its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory of the season and very nearly got number two at a tri-match held at Grove City College on Saturday.

 

The Yellow Jackets (5-8, 1-2) opened the day with a 3-1 victory over the host Wolverines (5-11, 1-1). The set scores for the match were 25-20, 25-23, 25-27, 25-21 in favor of Waynesburg.

 

Senior Laurie Lindner paced the Waynesburg attack with 16 kills and fellow senior Amanda Jo Morgan chipped in 11 kills. Yet another Yellow Jacket senior, Amanda Staudt, led the team with 34 assists.

 

Three Jackets had double-digit efforts in digs. Sophomore Rachell Storm led the trio with 15 digs, while Staudt added 12 and Lindner chipped in 10.

 

In their second match of the day, the Jackets locked up in a back-and-forth contest with Washington and Jefferson. That match went to five sets with the Presidents (5-4, 3-1) pulling out a 3-2 victory by the scores of 16-25, 25-16, 25-22, 17-25, 15-9.

 

Lindner had another solid effort on the attack with a team-high 17 kills, with Katie Balzer adding 11.

 

Again, there was a trio of Waynesburg players in double digits when it came to digs with Storm (23), Lindner (14) and Julie Incerpi (13).

 

Staudt paced the Jackets with 44 assists.

 

After recording their first conference victory, Waynesburg will look to even their PAC mark at 2-2 on Wednesday, Sept. 24, when they travel to the home of the defending PAC champions, Westminster.
