BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Jan. 10) – It was a rough road trip to Beaver Falls for the Waynesburg men's basketball team as they dropped an 80-60 contest to Geneva Saturday night.
The loss dropped the Yellow Jackets to 5-8 overall on the year, while the Golden Tornadoes jumped to 3-9.
After taking an early 12-10 advantage, the Jackets gave up a 9-0 run to their opponents to fall behind 19-12. The Tornadoes never relinquished the lead after that point, building an advantage as large as 17 points (38-21) with 6:35 on the clock before halftime.
Things didn't get much better in the second period as the home team led by as many as 28 points before the game had concluded.
Junior guard Ryan Courneen led Waynesburg with 15 points on four-of-eight shooting from the floor. Senior guard Zack Engel chipped in nine for the Yellow Jackets and senior point guard Jarell Rodriguez led the team with six rebounds.
The freshman combination of Dave Phillips and Lambros Svingos led Geneva to victory. Phillips, a native of Beaver Falls, led all scorers with 25 points, while Svingos, a 6-6 forward/center, put together a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
Shooting woes plagued the Jackets in the loss, as they shot just 36 percent (17-for-47) from the floor, as compared to an even fifty percent (31-for-62) by Geneva.
The Golden Tornadoes also enjoyed a big advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the visitors 41-28.
The Yellow Jackets will try rebound from their bitter defeat on Wednesday, Jan. 14, when they travel to Grove City to battle the Wolverines.
