GROVE CITY, Pa. (Jan. 14) – The Waynesburg men's basketball team couldn't close a narrow halftime gap against Grove City on Wednesday night and dropped an 80-68 decision to the Wolverines.
The Yellow Jackets (5-9, 2-3) kept the game close throughout most of the first half, trailing by only three points (33-30) with 3:40 left in the first half. Down by four just before the end of the first period, sophomore forward Jeff Young tipped a shot in to cut the Wolverines' (8-5, 3-2) lead down to two (38-36).
Early in the second half, however, the home team pulled away for a nine-point lead (47-38), its largest of the game at that point, with a 9-2 run over the first 5:14 of the second half.
The Wolverines took over from there, building leads as big as 20 points down the stretch, before a late surge by the Jackets trimmed the lead down to as little as 10 (78-68) before the final buzzer sounds.
Waynesburg was led by senior guard Jason Clark, who poured in a game-high 18 points. He also pulled down six rebounds and recorded a steal. Fellow senior guard Dan Happe added 16 points and Young recorded a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
As a team, the Jackets struggled from the field, connecting on just 36 percent (25-70) of their shots, including making only nine-of-31 from beyond the three-point arc.
The Wolverines got a double-double from junior center Andy O'Keefe, who racked up 11 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Senior guard Joe McCoy led Grove City with 17 points.
The Waynesburg men return to action on Saturday, when they host rival Washington and Jefferson on Saturday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Tip-off is schedule for 7:30 p.m.
