Waynesburg women fall to Westminster

Titans come back from 12 down in second half to drop Jackets 58-53

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 7) – The Waynesburg University women led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but couldn't hold off a Westminster comeback as the Yellow Jackets dropped a heart-breaking 58-53 contest to the Titans.

 
After taking a 27-26 lead at halftime, the Jackets built up a 12-point advantage (44-32) with 11 minutes to go in the game and appeared to be primed for a victory. 

However, the Titans went on a 14-2 run to tie the game at 46-46 with 5:35 to go in regulation. 

The Yellow Jackets responded by taking the lead back on a free throw by freshman point guard Hannah Hunter. After senior forward Jeanette Wonsettler dropped in a lay up with 3:32 left to play to take a 49-46 advantage. 

Again, the Titans were able to respond, this time with a 5-0 run to take a 51-49 lead with 2:44 showing on the clock. Waynesburg was able to tie the game at 51-51on a lay up by freshman forward Callie White a short time later, but the Titans finished the game on a 7-2 run to close out the contest and seal the win.


Waynesburg was led by Wonsettler, who poured in a season-high 16 points off the bench. Sophomore forward Elisha Jones pitched in 15 points and eight rebounds in the loss.

 

White chipped in nine points and nine rebounds for the Jackets, who fell to 4-6 on the year and 2-2 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play.

 

The Titans, who improved to 1-3 in PAC play and 4-7 overall, were led by junior guard Amy Dolsak, who rolled up 16 points and eight rebounds.


Waynesburg returns to the court on Saturday, Jan. 10, when they travel to Beaver Falls, Pa. to take on Geneva.
