Volleyball team earns split at road tri-match

Jackets down La Roche 3-1 at Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (Oct. 10) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team split a pair of matches in a tri-match that was held at Franciscan University on Saturday.

 

The Yellow Jackets downed La Roche 3-1 and dropped a 3-1 match to the host Barons. The split improves Waynesburg's record to 4-15 on the season.

 

The Jackets lost the opening set with the Red Hawks by the score of 25-19 and then rebounded by taking the final three sets of the match 25-11, 25-14, 25-15. The Waynesburg attack was led by Carly Schubert, who tallied a team-best 12 kills.

 

Freshman Carly Smithyman had one of her best performances as a collegiate player with 31 assists, while junior Rachell Storm totaled a team-best 19 digs.

 

Franciscan was able to get past the Jackets by the scores of 25-18, 25-20, 17-25, 25-22.

 

Sophomore Jordan Barton paced Waynesburg with 13 kills, with Smithyman piling up a Jacket-best 27 assists. The Jackets' defensive efforts were led by Storm and freshman Presley Cupp, who recorded 15 and 10 digs, respectively.

 

The Yellow Jackets return to the court on Tuesday, Oct. 13, when they travel to Washington to face Washington & Jefferson in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match.
