Volleyball team hosts Geneva and Saint Vincent in home tri-match

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 3) – The Waynesburg University women's volleyball team dropped both contests in Saturday morning's tri-match with Geneva and Saint Vincent colleges.

 

In the opener, the Yellow Jackets were swept by Geneva by the set scores of 25-10, 25-17 and 25-14. Freshman Presley Cupp led three Yellow Jackets who recorded double-digit digs with 22. Junior Rachell Storm added 13, while sophomore Jordan Barton tallied 11.

 

Freshman Carly Smithyman totaled 15 assists against the Golden Tornadoes.

 

The Jackets rebounded with a strong performance against a traditionally solid Saint Vincent team, but again fell by a 3-0 final. The Bearcats got the win with set scores of 25-17, 26-24 and 25-23.

 

Sophomore Carly Schubert led the Waynesburg attack in its second match of the day with a team-best 12 kills on just 20 attempts. Smithyman put up another good performance from her setter spot by piling up 23 assists.

 

Three different Jackets again cracked the double-digit plateau in digs with Barton recording a team-best 21, Cupp adding 19 and Storm pitching in 13. Sophomore Jenna Stoltzfus contributed five total blocks (one solo stuff) against the Bearcats.

 

Saint Vincent finished the day 2-0 by downing the Golden Tornadoes 3-1 (25-12, 25-13, 19-25, 25-14).

 

Things don't get any easier for Waynesburg (3-12, 1-6) as their next action comes on Oct. 6, when they travel to face the two-time defending Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champions from Westminster.
