HAMBURG, N.Y. (Nov. 17) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team took a long trip to open the 2009-10 season, as they traveled to face Hilbert.
The young Yellow Jackets put up a terrific effort against Hawks, but couldn't quite seal the deal as they dropped a 72-67 overtime contest. The loss dropped the Jackets to 0-1 on the season, and Hilbert improved to 1-0.
Down 59-58 as time expired, freshman Aaron Cromwell was fouled and sent to the charity stripe for a pair of free throws. He missed his first attempt, but managed to bury the second to send the game to overtime.
Unfortunately, Hilbert jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back as they out-scored the Yellow Jackets 13-8 to take the victory.
Junior guard Steven Iser tied for the game high in scoring and set a new personal single-game high with 21 points. Sophomore forward James Allenby and senior guard Ryan Courneen each chipped in 10 points to the Waynesburg effort.
Junior guard Erik Noone led the Jackets with seven rebounds, while sophomore guard Ben Altmeyer dished out a team-high four assists.
Hilbert was led by Daren Cleveland's double-double effort (21 points, 12 rebounds). He was one of four Hawks to record double-digits scoring nights.
The Waynesburg men return to the courts on Friday, Nov. 20, when they take part in the Crons Classic, which will be hosted by La Roche College. The two-day event includes games against Penn State-Beaver and the host Red Hawks.
