Waynesburg loses one of its own

Long-time equipment manager Dave Jones passes away

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 2) – It is with a heavy heart that Waynesburg University had to say goodbye to one of its own as long time equipment manager and athletic facilities director Dave Jones passed away Sunday, Nov. 1, at Southwest Regional Medical Center in Waynesburg. He was 67.

Jones spent two decades as a true fixture and one of the most recognizable members of the athletics staff at Waynesburg. Whether it was making sure the uniforms were cleaned and ready for a football game, or the court at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse was prepared for a basketball doubleheader, Jones was in charge of the operation.

Waynesburg's athletic programs would not have been able to function without his tireless efforts and dedication to excellence. He will be deeply missed.

He was born in Waynesburg on Aug. 17, 1942, as the son of the late William E. and Roberta L. McCann Jones and graduated from Cumberland Township High School in 1960.

Dave was also a decorated member of the United States Armed Services. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and retired in 1982 at the rank of master sergeant with four Bronze Service Stars.

He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Sue White and husband Wilbur of Mather and Tammy Lynn Thomas of Browns Mills, N.J.; four grandchildren, Timothy J. White, David H. White, Brandon L. White and Kelly M. Thomas; a sister, Rose Maskil of Rices Landing; and a brother, Lee Jones of Crucible.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and William Jones.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 7 p.m., on Wednesday, November 4, at Behm Funeral Homes Inc. in Jefferson, Pa. Military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Air Force.
